Volunteering round-up: January 2022

Welcome to our first volunteering round-up of 2022, with the latest sector updates and training opportunities.

News of covid-19 restrictions finally being lifted in England will be met with mixed feelings, meanwhile changes are coming into effect from 1 April for anyone volunteering or working in regulated Care Quality Commission (CQC) settings.

We know that covid-19 is still a huge concern for many organisations. Keep an eye on our guidance on involving volunteers and working with staff for practical tips and information to help you through the coming months.

Here are the latest sector updates.

Vaccination requirement for health and social care volunteers and workers

From 1 April 2022, anyone volunteering or working in patient-facing and non-clinical roles in health and social care will need to be fully vaccinated against covid-19. If this applies to you, you’ll need to receive your first dose of the vaccine by 3 February 2022.

The regulations apply to health and social care volunteers and workers who carry out CQC-regulated activity; those who have direct, face-to-face contact with service users and are aged 18 and over. It includes people volunteering and working in non-clinical, ancillary roles who enter areas used for CQC-regulated activity as part of their role and those who deliver social care with patients.

An organisation will be legally required to demonstrate the covid-19 vaccination status of their volunteers and workers and will need to collect, store and use information about this in line with UK Data Protection Regulations.

Building Strong Communities Fund now open

Are you part of – or supporting – a community that has been badly affected by covid-19?

Do you have a great idea for a project to help rebuild community strength, voice or connection? Perhaps you’re already running a programme to benefit more people or reach new groups that you’d like to expand?

The Greater London Authority (GLA) is inviting applications from London voluntary and community sector groups with an annual turnover of £200k or less, to apply to their Building Strong Communities Grants Fund.

The following three types of grants are available.

Microgrants of £1,000
• Microgrants between £1,001 and £5,000
• Small grants between £5,001 and £10,000

Grants will be awarded across three rounds.

The call for the first round of applications opened in December 2021 and closes 14 February 2022. There will be two further rounds, in spring and summer 2022.
