Governance round-up: August 2023

Welcome to our monthly governance round-up. This month we look at the latest guidance from the Charity Commission and share recent governance news and events.

BoardLead trustee matching service

BoardLead connects charities with qualified, skilled, and mission-driven trustee candidates. It’s a free service for charities based in the Greater London area.

BoardLead has successfully placed more than 2,500 professionals on over 1,100 boards across the United States and the Greater London area. As well as introducing you to talented professionals, BoardLead also vets potential trustees to check they’re the right fit for your organisation.

Candidates get access to governance training so they can make a big impact from day one.

BoardLead is a partnership between Cause Strategy Partners, Trustees Unlimited, and NCVO.

In the news

Serious incident with the Scouts

The Scouts filed a Serious Incident Report (SIR) with the Charity Commission last week after they chose to relocate their attendees from the World Scout Jamboree.

The charity will take more than £1m from its reserves to cover the cost of the move. Their chief executive, Matt Hyde, said this will impact their work for the next 3-5 years.

Reporting on disability pay gaps

New Civil Society research shows that only 4% of large charities are reporting on their disability pay gaps.

The results are positive for those who do report, with the average pay gap falling well below the national average.

Reporting your disability pay gap is voluntary, unlike reporting on gender pay gaps. All boards should consider reporting on the disability pay gap to help tackle the lack of diversity in our sector

Training and events

Bespoke training

We’re seeing a lot of interest from organisations who’d like to run our safeguarding and trustee training in-house.

When we deliver a bespoke in-house training course we can:

  • tailor the course content to meet your needs
  • reflect your policies
  • provide opportunities for your staff and trustees to discuss challenges and issues.

We’ve had some excellent feedback.

Today's session has been absolutely brilliant ... It's not often I feel excited off the back of training but I absolutely do with this and I'm going to dive straight into our theory of change development! Thank you!

Alex Youngs, chair of trustees at Gorleston Pavilion Trust
