We are committed to supporting, enabling and celebrating volunteering in all its diversity. Our volunteering pages have more resources for would-be volunteers.
NCVO doesn’t broker or place volunteers in charities directly but we have a selection of resources to help you find a suitable opportunity.
Managing your volunteers effectively and providing them with adequate support will help you retain them. Managers of volunteers have challenging roles, often carried out with few resources and as part of a much wider role.
Information and guidance
NCVO Knowhow Nonprofit is our advice and support website. You’ll find information on involving volunteers, strategy, recruiting and managing volunteers, as well as how-to guides and case studies contributed by the community.
Our publications include the best-selling Volunteering Impact Assessment Toolkit. We also have some free volunteering downloads for NCVO members, on topics including DBS, health and safety, and expenses.
Association of Volunteer Managers (AVM) is an independent body that aims to support, represent and champion people who manage volunteers in England, regardless of field, discipline or sector. It has been set up by and for people who manage volunteers.
Training and events
We run training courses on volunteer management throughout the year. Take a look at our event listing to find out more and browse our training.
National Volunteering Forum
Our National Volunteering Forum brings together volunteer-involving organisations and volunteer infrastructure bodies from around England to discuss issues of shared concern, feed into NCVO’s policy positions and to network. We run three events every year, including at least one outside of London.
Volunteers' Week is an annual event, coordinated by NCVO, which takes place on 1-7 June, recognising and celebrating the contribution made by volunteers nationwide.
Looking for trustees or advertising trustee positions?
Our Trustee Bank offers a free service to NCVO member organisations who want to advertise and is free for everyone to look at.

Step on Board - a board level volunteering programme
Step on Board trains and helps senior employees from major corporates to take up positions on the boards of non-profit organisations. Registration for Step on Board is free to NCVO members with an annual turnover of less than £1m, and we’ll be in touch if we find someone suitable.
Investing in Volunteers (IiV) is the UK quality standard for good practice in volunteer management. If you would like to benchmark the quality of your volunteer management and involvement, find out the effectiveness of your work with volunteers and enhance your organisation's reputation, IiV is the ideal quality standard for you.
Investing in Volunteers for Employers is the UK award recognising commitment to best practice in employer supported volunteering. It is designed for any size of company that supports its employees to volunteer and is flexible enough to recognise the full range of volunteering that may be offered by an employer.
At NCVO we offer bespoke, specialist advice on volunteer management to voluntary and community organisations striving to make a difference.
