'A Day in the Life' work shadow scheme

A Day in the Life provides a unique opportunity for staff from central government and voluntary organisations to step into each other's shoes for a day, and learn about how the other sector operates.

The scheme helps participants find out about the roles and responsibilities of staff within another organisation, and the operational environments and wider contexts in which they work.

How the scheme works

Applicants are paired with a suitable person from the opposite sector. At a convenient time, they can spend a day shadowing each other in their organisations. We recommend that participants work together prior to the exchange days to plan a day that best meets the interests of their partner.

A great use of time and really interesting to see how my work impacts on organisations in the same policy area but outside government Department for Education.
Department for Education
Absolutely amazing experience and I felt very honoured to be included in this initiative. It was a fascinating insight into the home office and my match looked after me well.
Restore Ltd (charity)
It was a fantastic experience and have gained a very good insight of government institutions' processes.
