Strategy

Guidance for trustees on their strategic responsibilities.

This page is free to all

A strategy mobilises an organisation to get to its future. Trustees should help oversee and develop your charity’s strategy. You should do this in partnership with staff and volunteers.

The board should make sure there are appropriate goals and milestones in place to track progress toward a strategy. Boards need to monitor and ask for evidence that the strategy is making the desired impact.

You should make sure the strategy:

  • aligns with the charity's purpose
  • is for the public benefit
  • is something the board is involved in developing, not just agreeing
  • has clear objectives and goals which provide milestones for progress

You should be able to demonstrate the impact of your strategy in a way the organisation understands. Strategic priorities should be discussed and evaluated as part of your board agenda.
