Introduction to trustee responsibilities

This page is free to all

All trustees must take responsibility for decisions that benefit their charity. They should use their skills and experience to inform these decisions.

Trustees aren’t expected to be experts in everything. But they are required to do their best to comply with their duties. In the Charity Commission’s essential trustee guidance, this is called ‘acting with reasonable care and skill’.

Trustees may carry out specific roles or be delegated specific responsibilities. But it’s important to remember that trustees have a collective legal responsibility for their charity. They must make decisions together as a board.

Use the pages in this section to explore some trustee responsibilities in more detail.
