Sometimes problems can occur and a trustee may need disciplinary action. A code of conduct and an agreed trustee disciplinary process help make sure any issues are handled fairly and consistently.

This pack provides practical guidance and a model code of conduct byelaw to help your board prevent conflicts from escalating and maintain good governance.

For the byelaw to be effective, the board must take collective responsibility for it and be actively involved in developing, approving and applying it.

This pack is a guide and not a substitute for professional or legal advice. You should adapt it to meet the needs of your organisation.

Read this with our guidance on approaching board relationship challenges.

This resource pack includes:

  • guidance on developing a trustee disciplinary procedure
  • an example trustee code of conduct byelaw to be adapted for your own organisation.
