Beyond the basics in cybersecurity

This page is free to all

If you want a more detailed approach to cyber risk management in your organisation, this page is for you. It takes you beyond the five basic steps.

Considering cyber risk

When you’re ready to go beyond the basics in cybersecurity, start with questions like these.

  • Do you really know how to assess cyber risks, do you spend enough time on this?
  • How careful are your suppliers and digital partners when it comes to cyber risks?
  • Do you know which systems you should prioritise and protect?
  • Would it be helpful for someone on your team to have training and certification?

This webinar introduces you to cyber risk management concepts and planning and the government’s Cyber Essentials certification programmes. It’s produced by Zurich Insurance for NCVO.

Staying up to date with cybersecurity advice

Here’s a list of trusted sources of advice that’ll help you when you've addressed the basics.

National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC)

There’s a small charities page on the website of the leading government agency working on cyber security. It has an introduction to threat assessment and other useful links. These include a downloadable colour pdf guide that contains similar information to our five basic steps. It's relevant to all small organisations.

Cyber essentials scheme

Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus are government backed certification programmes. They’re for organisations with larger systems, more sensitive data to protect or a higher profile. But anyone can use it. If you want a formal approach to cyber risk management and certification then take a look. There’s a cost, depending on the level you follow.

Make sure you find a National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) approved programme not an alternative.
