The growth in charity income from government over the last ten years has been marked by a shift from grants to contracts – and by increases in recent years only seen by the largest charities. Even within the private sector, many providers are questioning how desirable their involvement in public service delivery is.For charities the picture is being further complicated by the advent of new devolved bodies such as Sustainability and Transformation Plan Areas (STPs) and Accountable Care Systems (ACSs), but there may also be new opportunities with renewed emphasis on co-production and systems-thinking in contexts such as healthcare.

This session will discuss the circumstances in which public service delivery is sustainable for charities, looking at recent trends in public service commissioning.
