Influencing parliament

An election means that there will be a new parliament that will need to quickly get to grips with legislating for Brexit and pushing forward the new government’s agenda, so it will be important for charities to understand the full range of ways to influence through parliament. This course aims to help charities navigate the political environment or refresh their knowledge of parliamentary processes and procedures – essential if your organisation is looking to make an impact in Westminster.

Date 3 July 2017

Many charities will need to understand the various factors shaping this parliament to adapt their lobbying and campaigning tactics. This course draws on NCVO's experience of working with parliament and influencing government.

The course will explain:

  • how Theresa May will seek to implement Brexit with a small majority
  • how smaller parties can influence the agenda
  • how these factors will play out in an increasingly diverse and rebellious parliament.

By the end of the day you will have:

  • understood how to get your issue on the agenda in Westminster
  • understood the range of parliamentary processes and procedures that will help your campaign get traction
  • discussed the requirements of charity law and the lobbying act
  • discussed how best to build lasting relationships with parliamentarians
  • planned out real life campaign scenarios.
