Voluntary Trustee Positions
(Legal, Financial and HR expertise particularly welcome)

The BSL Bible Translation Project
is a charity that is translating the Christian Bible into British Sign Language. Currently, the Deaf Community in the UK have no access to a scholarly and ecclesiastically accepted Bible in their first, or heart, language.

We have been working part time with teams of translators, Bible scholars, and with feedback and support from Deaf community members, since 2006. A board of Deaf and hearing Trustees oversees the Project. For more information about the BSL Bible Translation Project, visit our website: We are now aiming to expand and increase our work.

The Project has Charitable Company status, registered with the Charity Commission and with Companies House as a Company Limited by Guarantee. We are looking to appoint new members to our Board of Trustees.

We have been working with a small budget and part time activities for the last 11 years but in the next 12-18 months we anticipate that the Project will receive an injection of funding, and will need to employ staff. This is a very exciting stage for this fascinating and important work. We are therefore in particular need of Trustees who have financial, legal and HR or project management experience and expertise. We wish to build a robust Board with a series of portfolios.

The Trustee Board currently meets around 4 times a year but has contact via email between meetings.

We are looking for a number of trustees each with some of the key skills listed below:

  • Experience in management, including management of volunteers and staff
  • Project management for voluntary organisations
  • Financial management, including accountancy
  • Legal expertise

Those applying should possess:

  • A background in business, the public sector including charities and/or other experience relevant to the Project’s development
  • Experience of trustee roles or similar governance or board experience
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and commitment to the position
  • A good understanding of and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • Integrity
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a people from a range of backgrounds, including Deaf and hearing trustees, volunteers and staff.

Applications from those with an interest in the Deaf Community and British Sign Language are particularly welcome. Applications from British Sign Language users and those who are identify as Deaf or disabled are also encouraged.

The translation is aimed at the widest possible Deaf Christian audience, across different Christian church denominations around the UK. The governing documents require Trustees to agree to a brief doctrinal statement.

These are voluntary positions. Reasonable expenses will be paid.

For more information, including an informal discussion with members of the current Trustee Board, please email Sarah Haynes, the Project Company Secretary with your CV, including referees.
