Opportunities for Trustee involvement in a start-up charity

Smart Works Newcastle is part of a UK charity focused on helping out-of-work women on low incomes get back into the workforce.

As we prepare to launch in spring 2018, we are looking for Trustees to join our Board and help us guide Smart Works Newcastle through the first exciting few months and years as a new start-up charity. We want someone who is passionate about Smart Works, what we do and wants to help support women in their local community in a way that is tangible, focused and successful.

In June 2017, Smart Works was named as Social Action Charity of the Year at the Charity Awards. It is now our mission to take our award-winning service to help more women around the UK and we have identified Newcastle as an area where there is a real need for our dressing and interview coaching service.

About Smart Works

Smart Works is a UK charity that provides high quality interview clothes, styling advice and interview training to women in need. We give women the confidence, the self-belief and the practical tools they require to succeed at interview and start a new chapter in their life.

At the core of our service is a two-hour appointment, when each woman receives a complete outfit of high quality clothes and accessories (theirs to keep) and one-to-one interview training. This short intervention has a significant impact as our clients start believing in their own ability to succeed.

Smart works has a unique and efficient volunteer led business model. All our service delivery (the dressing session and interview coaching) is done by a team of over 180 skilled and trained volunteers and our high quality stock is donated from other working women or comes new from retailers.

In the last three years, we have taken our service from one centre in London to six centres across the UK, and are now helping women in Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Reading, with Newcastle scheduled for Spring 2018. We are incredibly proud that in each of our locations, over one in two of the women we help go on to get the job.

Recently named Social Action Charity of the Year 2017, it is our mission to help as many women get back into work workplace across the UK, supporting them on their path to financial independence.

What they are looking for?

We are looking for passionate individuals to support the role out of Smart Works Newcastle.

You may have a background in the charity sector; you may have experience in fashion; you may work in the private sector and relish a new challenge; you may be none of these things. There is no typical Smart Works person. Instead we are committed to helping women, and insist on a collaborative approach, learning from each other to help deliver the services uniquely provided by this charity.

You will bring your experience, your contacts and your energy to Smart Works Newcastle. The role will be varied and flexible and we are looking for someone with a hands-on attitude with time to spare for this vital role in a start-up charity. It will be hard work and demanding, but it will also be great fun, and a great opportunity to nurture a new charity in the early stages of our development. Trustees will have a direct responsibility for fundraising and operational performance at Smart Works Newcastle

We hold monthly Board meetings at our office in Newcastle City Centre. There will also be some work with our umbrella charity, Smart Works, based in London, and the opportunity to contribute and take part in national events, conferences and strategy sessions.
