When I applied for the course…

I was half way through delivering a large change project within a complex organisation- developing a strategic plan for inclusivity.

I decided to apply because…

My line manager attended the course in the cohort before, and found the course useful. On reflection, I think some of the insights he gained during the course made him reflect in a different way on why I was finding things tough and how to get the best out of me.

The course was valuable because...

It was like flexing some muscles I hadn’t used in a long time. I found the residential element inspirational, and without doubt the most valuable ‘learning experience’ I’ve had at any stage in my career to date.

From attending this course I have...

Remembered what it was like to be at my best and how important organisational culture is to me being at my best. Professionally, it reminded me of my strengths and experiences, rather than always focusing on weaknesses. The course hugely expanded my knowledge of leadership, and how to make the best of my skills and invest time in my weaknesses.

It shaped my leadership style because...

It has made me much more aware of what I do, don’t do and need to do. The course has made me more confident of my own style, and equipped me with lots of the tools I’ll need to be a better leader. It has made me more aware of the things I need to be at my best, and worry less about asking for these to be met. Exploring lots of different styles has been invaluable in understanding others.

I am now...

I have recently accepted a more senior role in a different organisation, developing a new team with lots of opportunities for the future. The course certainly helped me get there and I am really looking forward to finding more opportunities to ‘flex my leadership muscles’ in a different setting, learn from it and get lots better at what I do.

I know this course will influence my future career because...

Before the course, I felt like I was failing and was, on reflection, quite ashamed of feeling like thatAfter the course, as I take on my first senior manager role, I feel much more equipped with the knowledge and skills to do a good job.
