Free NCVO membership extended as merger with Volunteering England is confirmed

The merger between NCVO and Volunteering England was finalised today, with the organisations set to formally come together on 1 January 2013.

Volunteering England’s 1,800 members will become NCVO members, while existing NCVO members will gain access to Volunteering England resources.

In advance of the merger, NCVO is today extending its threshold for free membership from organisations with an annual income under £10,000 to organisations with an annual income under £30,000. This matches Volunteering England’s threshold for free membership and means all 1,100 Volunteering England members whose membership is currently free will benefit from NCVO membership free of charge. Paid Volunteering England members will transfer to a corresponding NCVO membership band when their renewal is due. The change opens up free NCVO membership to an estimated 28,000 additional sector organisations.

Martyn Lewis CBE, chair of NCVO, said:

"Our members are at the forefront of building a better society. By coming together, we will be a stronger voice than ever for volunteering and the voluntary sector. I'd like to pay tribute to trustees and staff from both organisations whose tough but always friendly negotiations made this merger possible.

"I’m particularly pleased that we are able to extend free membership to even more small charities today, many of which rely extensively on volunteers. NCVO is determined to provide the best support possible in what continues to be a challenging time."

Sukhvinder Kaur Stubbs, chair of Volunteering England, said:

"With our combined membership, the new NCVO will command even greater resources for our sector. It will be pivotal in shaping civil society while ensuring the voice of volunteering remains ever loud and clear. I wish the new board and executive of NCVO great success with the responsibilities they are taking on."

Volunteering England has 1,800 members; 400 are already NCVO members. The remaining 1,400 members will be transferred to NCVO membership on 1 January. NCVO’s total membership will be 9,900 at that date.

Staff, volunteers and trustees at NCVO member organisations benefit from practical information, advice and support to help them in their roles including news bulletins, free helplines (including specific advice on VAT and HR), free guides and how-tos, and discounts on NCVO resources and consultancy. Membership also helps organisations cut costs through discounts on products and services like software, telecoms and insurance.
