The Green Gyms reducing loneliness, improving fitness & harnessing volunteers

The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) works with thousands of people across the UK, helping them to discover, improve and enjoy their local green spaces and by doing so create happier and healthier communities.

TCV runs over 130 Green Gyms up and down the country – free to join activity sessions which run in local community spaces such as parks and allotments. Volunteers join to get active and healthy whilst also improving their community through the work they do – whether it’s tree planting, path clearing or food growing – they leave behind a better space for others to run in, walk in and get active in.  TCV also runs special groups for children, adults and elderly people. Research has shown participants improve their mental and physical health through Green Gym activity.

An impact report by the New Economics Foundation showed that the social return of investment for Green Gyms is £4 for every £1 spent.

GPs are already prescribing outdoor volunteering with organisations like TCV as a way of improving mental and physical health and wellbeing.
