The volunteer buddies accompanying people with learning disabilities to do trampolining or watch a rugby match

Yarrow’s Opening Doors volunteering project matches volunteers with people with learning disabilities with shared interests so they can access sports and arts together. It’s a three year project, funded by City Bridge Trust. They delivered 309 sporting and cultural opportunities to 93 adults with learning disabilities over the course of the year.

In its second year, the project introduced new swimming, tennis and specialist yoga sessions which take place regularly with a group. They continue to run circuit training, darts and football sessions which were established in the first year. As well as the group work, they have set up volunteer buddies to support one or two adults to do trampolining or to watch a rugby match.

A big focus this year has been healthy eating. They have been working with a volunteer trainee Psychologist who has been delivering healthy eating and cooking workshops at The Gate, as well as many other Yarrow houses. They are in the process of editing simple cook along videos to share on YouTube.

They currently have 20 volunteers including 6 with learning disabilities
